Does Every Little Thing Turn Into an Argument?

You ask your child to turn off the screen. They ask for five more minutes. You say no. They argue.
You explain. They argue harder. You give another warning. They keep going.
And eventually, you're frustrated, they're upset and something that should have taken two minutes has turned into a 45-minute battle.
Sound familiar?
Maybe you've tried rewards, consequences, reminders, charts, taking things away or giving extra chances.
Some things work for a few days.
Then you're right back where you started.
And you find yourself thinking: "Nothing works with my child." But what if the strategy isn't always the problem?
What if you're changing the strategy before you've had a chance to see if it works?

Some Children Love a Good Arugment

Give them 14 reasons why the answer is no, and they'll find 15 reasons why it should be yes.
And before you know it, you're defending a decision that wasn't actually up for discussion.

Here's what I tell parents all the time: You're talking too much.
Your message may be good, but it's getting lost in your approach.
Children with ADHD can struggle with impulse control, emotional regulation, executive functioning and following through. They may need more support, structure, practice and repetition to develop these skills. But that doesn't mean you need to negotiate every expectation or change your approach every time they push back. Clear messages. Fewer words. Consistent responses. And strategies that make sense for how your child learns and processes information.

That's where change begins. ADHD parenting isn't about being harder on your child. It's about learning how to respond differently. You can understand why your child struggles AND still have expectations. You can validate their frustration AND hold a reasonable boundary. You can support their executive-functioning challenges AND help them develop independence. You can be compassionate AND consistent. You don't have to choose. But you do need a plan. Because when your child is yelling, refusing, arguing or overwhelmed, that's not the best time to figure out your parenting strategy. You want to know what you're going to do BEFORE things escalate.
